Village Culture
While the inhabitants of the village may no longer be a sect of warrior monks, the village has far from forgotten where they have come from. Many of the villagers wear the monk robes in similar fashion to the monks that came before them. Heads adorning takuhatsugasa fill the streets, as the rings of the shakujō jingle while the villagers make their way around the village. Clothing is not the only thing that remains however, to this day the villages still honor the deities that the monks once prayed to. Though once shrines of war, they have become symbols of good luck and prosperity and many from around the country make pilgrimages to attempt to receive the blessings.
The teachings of their monk forerunners have bestowed a sense of humility to the Hidden Lantern. Arrogance and pride are typically unheard of, as the teachings of the village are to work together for the greater good of their fellow countrymen. This has also created a hard working, and stubborn people. Who do not know how to back down and know that surrender only means loss and to lose in this day and age, is to perish.
Tradition above all else, the Terakage is more of a formal title for the master Monk that mediates between the four Noble Clans, who rule the village as a joined council. With ancestral connections to their four deities, the Noble houses of Torogakure are divided by cardinal directions.
In order of influence, they are as follows:
The Shui of the Northern Heavens, under the Dark Warrior; God of Martial Arts: Genbu, the Black Turtle. Genbu is regarded as the 'Greater Yin'. Water is their natural element. Winter is their honored season.
The Shang of the Southern Heavens, under the God of Healing: Suzaku, the Vermillion Phoenix. Suzaku is the 'Lesser Yang' of the fire element, Summer is their honored season.
The Jinshu of the Western Heavens, under the Beast King; God of Crafting: Byakko, the White Tiger. Byakko is known as the Greater Yang. Metal is their natural element. Autumn is their honored season.
The Xiaofan of the Eastern Heavens, under Seiryū, the Azure Dragon. God of Trade and Commerce. Seiryu is the Lesser Yin. Their natural element is Wood. Spring is their honored season.
For every honored season in Torogakure, a festival is held to honor each of the gods and to celebrate in their respective styles. More in-depth knowledge on each of the gods, noble families and their customs can be found on the individual clan pages.
Village Specialties
As they were once an order of active monks, the shinobi who inherited their position are quite adept at a variety of marital arts. Ringed broadwords, hookswords, and shakujō are the weapons of choice for many shinobi of the village and many go on to master these weapons.
Besides martial arts, the Hidden Lantern Village is known for its masteries of both sealing techniques and medical techniques. Based primarily around specially designed prayer beads, the Shinobi of the Lantern are taught from the academy how to accomplish many feats with these skills refined by the village.
As with all villages with a presence in the regional economy, The Hidden Lantern has its own specialized exports. The village is home to the finest craftsman in the world, and many come from distant lands in order to purchase goods. Another large export is the finest quality of silk as well as a large quantity of village grown produce.
